HR Coil Supplier in Visakhapatnam: Verify Before You Buy

Visakhapatnam and Gajuwaka. A verbal promise isn't a spec. It won't hold when the coil lands and the grade is wrong.

We're BuildEX. We handle HR coil enquiries — part lots, bulk, in-between. Before you start ringing suppliers, four things need pinning down: grade, thickness, weight basis, delivery terms.

What Is an HR Coil?

An HR coil is a steel slab rolled hot, then coiled while it's still hot. That's it. Low carbon means it cuts, welds and forms without fighting you — which is why fabricators reach for it on structural work, frames, pipes, general engineering. For more background, read what are HR coils and HR sheets.

HR coil vs CR coil. Hot rolled goes through the mill above recrystallisation temperature and keeps its mill scale. Cold rolled gets processed again — smoother surface, tighter tolerance, higher price. If you don't need the finish, HR is cheaper and takes more abuse.

HR coil vs HR plate. Plate sits flat and runs thicker. Coil comes wound — you cut to length or slit to width depending on what the job needs.

MS coil and HR coil. Same thing, different name. Mild steel, MS coil, HR coil — buyers use all three. Don't let a supplier tell you otherwise.

Thickness drifts. Half a millimetre is enough. Weight per metre changes, part count changes, the section isn't what you designed. Get the tolerance class in writing. Verbal doesn't count.

HR Coil Uses in Fabrication, Construction and Industry

Application

Typical uses

What buyers should evaluate

Structural fabrication

Beams, frames, supports

Grade, thickness tolerance, MTC

Pipe and tube making

ERW pipe, hollow sections

Width, thickness, coil weight

Construction equipment

Chassis, brackets, guards

Grade, formability, weld quality

Automotive and engineering

Panels, brackets, machine parts

Thickness consistency, surface

General engineering

Skids, bases, platforms

Thickness, length, intended load

Infrastructure

Barriers, railings, support frames

Corrosion protection, grade

Width and thickness decide what you can make. Coil weight decides how many pieces you get. All three sit on the MTC and the challan — check them against your PO before money moves.

HR Coil Sizes and Grades You Can Quote

HR coil is written as thickness × width. Sizes below are examples, not a stock list. What's actually available changes by mill and by week.

Thickness

Width

Typical use

1.6 mm

900–1250 mm

Light fabrication, pipes

2 mm

900–1250 mm

General fabrication

3 mm

1000–1500 mm

Structural work

4 mm

1000–1500 mm

Heavier fabricated assemblies

5 mm

1000–1500 mm

Structural and equipment frames

6 mm and above

1000–1500 mm

Heavy fabrication and plates

1.2 mm to 20 mm covers most HR coil. Past that, it's mill-dependent — width, tolerance, stock, all of it. Before you order, get thickness, width, coil weight, grade, tolerance and quantity confirmed. In writing, not on a call.

Grades we quote:

Grade

Availability

E250 (IS 2062)

Standard structural grade

E350 (IS 2062)

On request — must be named on MTC

Commercial grade

Available

Custom thickness

On request

E350 has higher tensile strength than E250 — and it has to be written on the mill test certificate by name. Order E350, get E250 at dispatch? That's a problem you catch now or a problem you catch on site.

HR Coil Weight and How Coil Weight Is Calculated

Coil weight decides how much steel you actually get. It's also the number most buyers check last.

The formula is thickness × width × length × density. Steel runs about 7,850 kg/m³.

Worked through on a 3 mm × 1250 mm coil, cut at 6 metres:

Volume per metre = 3 × 1250 × 1000 = 3,750,000 mm³

Weight per metre = 3,750,000 × 0.00000785 = 29.4 kg/m

A 6-metre length lands at about 176 kg

That's the theoretical number. It isn't what the weighbridge says, and it isn't always what you get billed on. Ask two questions before you pay: is the quote billed on theoretical or actual weight, and does the coil weight on the MTC match the challan?

Three things to check on the MTC:

Check

What it means

Grade

E250 or E350? The MTC has to state the exact grade on your PO.

Thickness and width tolerance

Compare the measured thickness and width to your PO. If the tolerance class isn't written down, you have nothing to hold anyone to.

Coil weight and piece count

The weight of each coil on the MTC must match the delivery challan. Piece count too.

Three things that mean the quote isn't real yet:

Red flag

What it means

No grade named

You don't know what you're buying.

No tolerance class stated

You can't hold anyone to a number nobody wrote.

No source named

You can't check the MTC against a mill you don't know.

Got your specs? Grade, thickness, width, quantity and delivery pincode. Send them and we'll quote within 24–48 hours — source named, MTC included.

HR Coil Price Per Kg in Visakhapatnam

Anyone quoting you a per-kg rate off a website hasn't seen your specs. Grade, thickness, width, weight — each one moves the number.

What drives it: grade (E250 vs E350), thickness, width, whether it's stock or mill-rolled, quantity, freight to your pincode, and GST. A listing rate is an average across all of those. Your rate is none of those averages.

Two buyers, same grade, same size — different rates because one's taking a part lot and one's taking a full heat. That's not a pricing trick. It's how the supply chain works.

Send your specs and get a rate that applies to your order. Not a number someone else paid last month.

How to Choose an HR Coil Supplier in Visakhapatnam

Two suppliers, same grade, same size, different prices. One names the mill. One doesn't. Guess which one you can hold to the MTC.

What to check before you commit: does the quote name the source? Will they send the MTC before you pay — not after, before? Do they split lead time between stock and mill-rolled? Can they supply part lots, or only full heats? Do they hand you a GST invoice with HSN code?

None of these are hard questions. A supplier who knows their material answers in one message.

We're BuildEX — a steel and metal supplier and procurement business, not a mill. Every quote names the source so you can check the MTC against that mill before you order.

Bulk HR Coil Orders for Fabrication and Construction Projects

Bulk changes the conversation. Full heats, mill-rolled, longer lead times, better per-tonne rate. Tell us what you need and we'll tell you which route gets you there faster — stock or mill.

For a project with a fixed schedule, mill-rolled is often the only route. For a job that needs material this week, stock is the answer. The quote tells you which one applies. Not a brochure.

Vizag fabricators in Gajuwaka rarely buy full mill heats. Part lots can make a 5-tonne requirement workable. The real minimum depends on grade, thickness, and whether it's in stock or still to be rolled.

Every quote names the source and splits the lead time. Stock usually moves inside a week. Mill-rolled takes longer. We confirm the exact date in your quote, based on your location and what's available when you order. A date we can hold. Not the fastest date we could say.

What happens after you send your specs:

Step

What happens

1. You send

Grade, thickness, width, quantity and delivery pincode. That's all we need to quote.

2. We reply

In 24–48 hours with the quote, source named, MTC commitment and lead-time split.

3. You verify

The MTC before dispatch and pay only against verified documents. If anything doesn't match your PO, you stop before dispatch.

Ready when you are. Send grade, thickness, width, quantity and pincode — we'll come back with the source named and the date we can hold.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Buying HR Coils

Paying against a listing rate. Accepting a verbal grade. Not checking the MTC against the PO. Skipping the tolerance class. Each one costs money. None of them are hard to avoid.

The biggest one: not asking for the source. A quote without a named mill is a quote you can't verify. When the coil arrives thin, or the grade is wrong, you've got nothing to point at.

The other one buyers miss: confusing HR and CR. They aren't interchangeable. HR is cheaper and heavier-duty; CR is smoother and tighter. If your job needs the finish, don't let a supplier talk you into HR to save a rupee.

One more: treating theoretical weight as billed weight. Confirm the billing basis before you compare prices. A quote that looks cheaper per kg can cost more per tonne once you run the numbers.

FAQ

What is an HR coil?

A steel slab rolled hot and wound into a coil. Mild steel, so it cuts, welds and forms easily. MS coil and HR coil mean the same thing in trade use.

What are HR coils used for?

Structural fabrication, pipe and tube making, construction equipment, automotive parts, general engineering, infrastructure. Width and thickness decide what you can make from a lot.

Should I order HR coil or HR sheet for my fabrication job?

Coil suits you if you're cutting the same thing again and again. Sheet suits one job at a time — it arrives flat and ready to use. HR coil grades: E250, E350 (IS 2062), commercial, custom thickness. E350 must be named on the MTC — no substitutions. Flat stock: HR coil sheets.

How is HR coil weight calculated?

Thickness × width × length × density. Steel density sits around 7,850 kg/m³. That's theoretical. Confirm whether your quote is billed on theoretical or actual weight.

What affects HR coil price per kg in Visakhapatnam?

Grade, thickness, width, weight basis, quantity, source, freight, delivery pincode, GST. A listing rate is an average across grades, not a quote for your order.

Do you supply part lots, or only full mill coils?

Yes, part lots. You don't need to buy a full heat. We're a procurement business — not a mill — so the quote names the source. You check the MTC against that mill before you order.

How do I verify grade and thickness before I pay?

MTC first. Grade against your PO. Thickness and width against your tolerance. Coil weight against the challan. If any of it doesn't line up, don't pay.

What details do you need to give me a quote?

Grade, thickness, width, quantity and delivery pincode. Add your tolerance requirement if your PO states one. We reply in 24–48 hours with the source named and the lead-time split.
